Experiencing the Sacred of Byzantine Greece

About

Experience the sacred through the eyes of Byzantine pilgrims. In this video, Flavia talks about Katholikon of Hosios Loukas and uncovers the beauty of this Byzantine church by analysing its architecture, mosaics and light. The Byzantine Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire after the creation of Constantinople, the second capital of the Roman Empire in 303 C.E. The Byzantine period spanned from the 4th century to the 15th century and is one of the most significant periods in Christian art. In this lecture, we will explore what is considered to be Byzantine art, as well as discuss how architecture, mosaics, wall paintings and light were used to create a sacred space within the Katholikon of Hosios Loukas monastery in Greece. Join us to experience the sacred of Byzantine Greece with this immersive video lecture.
